Cyclone Ditwah hit Sri Lanka with full force, causing massive destruction and claiming at least 56 lives, with 23 more missing. The storm triggered landslides and flooding due to over 300 mm of rain in just 24 hours. The eastern and central regions were hit hardest, with thousands evacuated to schools and public shelters. Schools were closed, train services suspended, and the Colombo Stock Exchange halted trading as the storm continued to move across the island.

    India’s Immediate Relief Efforts

India responded quickly by launching Operation Sagar Bandhu, sending emergency relief materials and humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences to the people of Sri Lanka and announced that India stands ready to scale up aid if needed. “We stand ready to provide more aid and assistance as the situation evolves,” Modi said, reaffirming India’s commitment to its closest maritime neighbor.

    Minister Jaishankar’s Statement

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed the start of the relief mission, stating that Operation Sagar Bandhu has commenced and further steps are underway. “INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri hand over relief material at Colombo. Further steps are underway,” he said, highlighting the urgency and scale of India’s response.

    Broader Context of Regional Support
